Website or mobile app: how to choose?

Website, mobile app or both? The questions to ask about your users, their habits and your budget before choosing the right approach.

It is one of the first questions of any digital project: do we need a website, a mobile app, or both? There is no universal answer, but a few simple questions make the decision easier.

Where are your users, and what do they want to do?

A website is reachable from any browser, with nothing to install, and search engines can index it. It is the right entry point to get discovered, present an offer or inform.

A mobile app is installed on the phone. It makes the most sense when your users come back often, need notifications, or use device features such as the camera or location.

The criteria that tip the balance

  • Discovery: do you want new customers to find you? Start with a well-optimized website.
  • Frequency of use: do your users come back every day? An app can build loyalty.
  • Device features: notifications, sensors, offline mode? An app is often better suited.
  • Budget and timing: a website goes live faster; an app requires publishing on the stores and ongoing maintenance.
  • Available team: an app is maintained over time, with regular updates.

A third way: start small

You do not have to choose once and for all on day one. Many projects start with a website or a minimal version (an MVP) to validate the need, then add an app when usage justifies it. A cross-platform technology also lets you build Android and iOS from a single codebase.

Do not forget the whole picture

A website and an app often share the same data and the same rules: designing a common programming interface (API) from the start avoids redoing everything later.
