AI in business: where to start?

Five steps to launch a first artificial intelligence project without spreading yourself thin: pick a use case, check your data and prototype small.

AI tools are multiplying, and it is tempting to "do something with AI" without knowing exactly what. The result? Impressive demos that change nothing in day-to-day work. Here is a simple way to start with a project that is actually useful.

Start from a problem, not a technology

The best starting point is not "which model should we use?" but "what costs us time or money today?". List the tasks that come back often, the questions your customers keep asking, the documents your teams retype by hand.

Pick a first use case

A good first project ticks most of these boxes:

  • Frequent: the task comes back every day or every week, so the benefit shows quickly.
  • Measurable: you can say what changes when it works (time saved, requests handled, errors avoided).
  • Fed by available data: the documents or histories it needs already exist.
  • Low risk: an occasional mistake is easy to fix, or a person validates the result.

Summarizing meeting notes, answering common questions from your documentation or sorting incoming requests are classic candidates.

Look at the state of your data

AI relies on what you give it. Before you begin, check where your content lives, whether it is up to date, and who is allowed to use it. An assistant fed with outdated documents will give outdated answers.

Keep a human in the loop

Decide from the start when a person reviews, validates or takes over. This rule, more than the technology, is what makes a project reliable: it protects your customers and your teams from mistakes, and it lets you build trust step by step.

Prototype small, then measure

Test a first version on a narrow scope: one team, one type of request, a few weeks. Compare with the starting situation, gather feedback, then decide whether to widen, adjust or stop. A small, well-measured trial beats a big program launched blindly.
